Frequently Asked Questions
What is Defensible Space?
Defensible Space is the area surrounding a home or property structure. This is the area where combustible materials and vegetation should be cleared and removed. The cleared area is able to better serve as a barrier between a wildfire and the home. Having and maintaining Defensible Space cannot guarantee that your home or property will survive wildfire. However, creating Defensible Space can significantly reduce wildfire risk.
What is Home Hardening?
Home Hardening includes retrofitting and installing fire-resistant construction products and materials on the exterior of your home. This can include patching holes/cracks/gaps and upgrading your vents, eaves/soffits, windows, skylights, exterior doors, garage doors, attached fences, patios/decks, patio/deck covers, roof, screens, siding/exterior walls and other items. While Wildfire can be unpredictable and challenging, hardening your home with fire-resistant materials and products can give your home the best opportunity to survive a wildfire and reduce risk.
What are wildfire threats to a home?
While many believe that direct flame is the only fire threat, there are other threats. These threats are radiant heat from nearby structures, materials and plants/trees. Additionally, flying embers can also cause fire and destroy homes. Flying embers are able to travel a mile or even more from the wildfire. In fact, per Cal Fire, fire caused by flying embers are responsible for the destruction of most homes during a wildfire.
